Connecting with your Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu Team: Google Maps

Teacher Notes with some preparation:

Create a My Map and/or Google Earth Project and include the schools from your Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu team.

Share the link to your My Map and/or Google Earth Project on your class site for learners to explore on their devices or display on your big screen to support group discussions and questions. See examples below.

How to:

Create a Google Earth Project

Create a Google My Map

For Learners on iPads: The following option could be easier for younger learners to manage and is an option if the don't have access to the Google Maps App in their iPad.

Teacher shares a screenshot of the school and surrounding area on the class site that learners can open and explore while teacher is navigating the actual map on the big screen. They can then take a screenshot of this image for the Create task below.

Learn: What do you notice about the area around and near each school?

e.g. The landscape, landmarks what buildings and structures can you see?

Are there any special places? What are the similarities and differences to our school?

What is the distance between the schools in your team?

Create: Take a screenshot of one of the schools in Google Maps.

Chromebook

Insert the screenshot in a Google Drawing. Use labels and arrows to highlight what you have noticed including  the similarities and differences.

Share your Google Drawing on your blog and include a description of what you noticed about the area around and near the school. How is it different to our school?

Step it up

Use the voice recording tools on the Chromebook or iPad to add a voice recording e.g.

Read the labels or describe what you have noticed

Share more information about a place or landmark you have discovered. e.g. The Foxton Water Tower

Embed the recording in a new blog post.

iPad

Insert the screenshot into a new Explain Everything project and lock the image. Use the text tool to label what you have noticed including  the similarities and differences.

An opportunity for learners to practise using the text tool to edit font, size and colours.

Are there any questions you could ask your Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu buddies in the blog comments about their school and the surrounding area?

Learners who are not 1:1

Share Maps on the big screen in your class and collaborate to create an annotated image digitally.

Print out copies of the Google My Map for learners to label with markers or print labels for learners to glue onto their map.

Share: Class and or individual blogs

Options

  • Upload annotated image

  • Embed video file with recording

  • Take photos of printed maps and upload.

What differences or similarities did you notice?

What questions do you have about your buddy school or their location?

What did you learn today about Google Maps?
